  • Help in the Search for the Needle in the Haystack

In the earth and environmental sciences, radioactive isotopes, atom variants that decay over time, play a major role in age determination. A radioactive isotope of the inert gas argon (39Ar), for example, is used to determine the age of water or ice. Such isotopes are extremely rare, however – only more

  • "Funnel" attracts bonding partners to biomolecule

Water is a ubiquitous solvent in all life sciences – sometimes referred to as the "matrix of life". Contrary to earlier assumptions, it is not a passive witness of biochemical processes; rather, it participates in them actively. By influencing the movement of water molecules surrounding their bindin more

  • Researchers Part Water

Using an "electric prism", scientists have found a new way of separating water molecules that differ only in their nuclear spin states and, under normal conditions, do not part ways. Since water is such a fundamental molecule in the universe, the recent study may impact a multitude of research areas more

  • Quantitative Detection of Legionella pneumophila in Water Samples: Assay Transfer to the LightCycler® 480 Real-Time PCR System

An assay to detect and quantify Legionella spp. in water samples was successfully transferred from a capillary-based LightCycler® Instrument to the novel multiwell plate-based LightCycler® 480 System. A previously described protocol was easily adapted by modifying the fluorescent label of the detection probe to match the filter set of the LightCycler® 480 Instrument. While reproducibility and analytical sensitivity of the assay were found to be comparable on both systems, the novel plate-based instrument allowed for higher sample throughput and reduced assay time per sample. more

  • Sum parameters "on trail"

Identification of organic pollutants in wastewater is essential for performance evaluation, construction and operation of a wastewater treatment plant. Several parameters are currently used in wastewater analysis applications. The advantages of TOC analyses are apparent especially during continuous monitoring more

  • Sensible and self-monitoring

For the generation of soft water are mostly used ion exchanging devices with generation of sodium chloride since the beginning of the Sixties. The generated soft water quality and soft water quantity are depending thereby on the static and dynamic characteristics of the softening plant in operation. more
