  • Automatic tracking of biological particles in cell microscopy images

In order to track the movements of biological particles in a cell, scientists at Heidelberg University and the German Cancer Research Center have developed a powerful analysis method for live cell microscopy images. This so-called probabilistic particle tracking method is automatic, computer-based a more

  • Fast synthesis could boost drug development

Small protein fragments, also called peptides, are promising as drugs because they can be designed for very specific functions inside living cells. Insulin and the HIV drug Fuzeon are some of the earliest successful examples, and peptide drugs are expected to become a $25 billion market by 2018. How more

  • Mechanism of dengue virus entry into cells

Dengue fever, an infectious tropical disease caused by a mosquito-borne virus, afflicts millions of people each year, causing fever, headache, muscle and joint pains and a characteristic skin rash. In some people the disease progresses to a severe, often fatal, form known as dengue hemorrhagic fever more

  • Real-Time PCR Quantification of Plant miRNAs Using Universal ProbeLibrary Technology

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are naturally occurring, highly conserved families of transcripts (18-25 nt in length) that are processed from larger hairpin precursors. Both plant and animal genomes encode miRNAs, and to date, there are over 4000 mature miRNA transcripts annotated. Although miRNAs represent a relatively abundant class of transcripts, their expression levels vary greatly among species and tissues. Less abundant miRNAs routinely fail detection using technologies such as cloning, northern hybridization and microarray analysis. Here, we present a real-time quantification method for accurate, sensitive, and economical detection of plant miRNAs based upon the stem-loop RT primer approach using an miRNA-specific primer coupled with a stem-loop specific Universal ProbeLibrary (UPL) probe. This approach represents a highly specific, sensitive, and easy-to-apply system to detect miRNAs. more

  • Detection of Avian H5N1 Virus with the LightCycler® Instrument

The avian H5N1 influenza virus has killed thousands of birds and caused several fatal cases in humans in Asia and Turkey. A fast and reliable test to identify the virus is urgently required for an effective epedemiological control, and associated medical research activities. RNA viruses mutate easily. Thus, detection has to focus on conserved sequence regions. The preferred gene for the detection of a broad spectrum of influenza A virus variants is the matrix protein (M2) gene. Tests for the specific detection of the H5N1 virus must detect its hemagglutinin (H5) and neuraminidase (N1) genes. more

  • Field-Flow Fractionation - The Universal Separation Principle for Particle and Macromolecule Characterization

High molecular weight polymers, bio molecules or particles in a range of a few nanometers up to several microns are more and more important in science and technology. Many applications are based on the specific properties of these materials. For this reason, an exact knowledge of the molar mass or particle sizes distribution is essential for later application as well as for optimization of the production processes or quality control. In addition the knowledge about the chain structure of macromolecules or biopolymers as well as about the shape of particles is often necessary. For this reason those samples, which often can be very complex systems, have to be separated according to parameters such as e.g. hydrodynamic volume or molecular weight. After the separation process the resulting narrow dispersed fractions are detected with different techniques. more
