  • A lab in your pocket

When you get sick, your physician may take a sample of your blood, send it to the lab and wait for results. In the near future, however, doctors may be able to run those tests almost instantly on a piece of plastic about the size of credit card. These labs-on-a-chip would not only be quick—results a more

  • New technique tracks proteins in single HIV particle

An interdisciplinary team of scientists from KU Leuven in Belgium has developed a new technique to examine how proteins interact with each other at the level of a single HIV viral particle. The technique allows scientists to study the life-threatening virus in detail and makes screening potential an more

  • Automatic tracking of biological particles in cell microscopy images

In order to track the movements of biological particles in a cell, scientists at Heidelberg University and the German Cancer Research Center have developed a powerful analysis method for live cell microscopy images. This so-called probabilistic particle tracking method is automatic, computer-based a more

  • Real-Time PCR Quantification of Plant miRNAs Using Universal ProbeLibrary Technology

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are naturally occurring, highly conserved families of transcripts (18-25 nt in length) that are processed from larger hairpin precursors. Both plant and animal genomes encode miRNAs, and to date, there are over 4000 mature miRNA transcripts annotated. Although miRNAs represent a relatively abundant class of transcripts, their expression levels vary greatly among species and tissues. Less abundant miRNAs routinely fail detection using technologies such as cloning, northern hybridization and microarray analysis. Here, we present a real-time quantification method for accurate, sensitive, and economical detection of plant miRNAs based upon the stem-loop RT primer approach using an miRNA-specific primer coupled with a stem-loop specific Universal ProbeLibrary (UPL) probe. This approach represents a highly specific, sensitive, and easy-to-apply system to detect miRNAs. more

  • Detection of Avian H5N1 Virus with the LightCycler® Instrument

The avian H5N1 influenza virus has killed thousands of birds and caused several fatal cases in humans in Asia and Turkey. A fast and reliable test to identify the virus is urgently required for an effective epedemiological control, and associated medical research activities. RNA viruses mutate easily. Thus, detection has to focus on conserved sequence regions. The preferred gene for the detection of a broad spectrum of influenza A virus variants is the matrix protein (M2) gene. Tests for the specific detection of the H5N1 virus must detect its hemagglutinin (H5) and neuraminidase (N1) genes. more

  • Fugene® HD Transfection Reagent: Superior Performance for Challenging Expression Studies

The ability to efficiently introduce foreign molecules into cells constitutes an important tool in any laboratory and facilitates studies of gene regulation and protein function. A plethora of transfection methods have been developed for transfer of DNA into mammalian and animal cells. Those methods either utilize the physicochemical properties of the vector-carrier of the DNA or use mammalian viruses. In the first group of methods, some classic techniques are well-known, such as: calcium phosphate, DEAE-dextran, electroporation liposome-mediated delivery, direct microinjection/biolistic particle delivery, and non-liposomal multi-component reagents. Viral vector systems use both DNA (Adeno-) and RNA (Retro-, Lenti-) viruses. more
