Chemical alterations of the genetic information specifically occuring during carcinogenesis provide the basis for the innovative diagnostic tests that are developed by the newly established oncgnostics GmbH in Jena. These tests allow not only for an earlier, but also a more accurate detection of can more

UF veterinarians hope new gene chip will help detect, treat West Nile virus in horses and humans
A new “gene chip” developed at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine sheds light on brain response in horses infected with West Nile virus and could lead to better ways to diagnose and treat both equines and humans, researchers said. Using gene sequencing technology, the researche more

Field-Flow Fractionation - The Universal Separation Principle for Particle and Macromolecule Characterization
High molecular weight polymers, bio molecules or particles in a range of a few nanometers up to several microns are more and more important in science and technology. Many applications are based on the specific properties of these materials. For this reason, an exact knowledge of the molar mass or particle sizes distribution is essential for later application as well as for optimization of the production processes or quality control. In addition the knowledge about the chain structure of macromolecules or biopolymers as well as about the shape of particles is often necessary. For this reason those samples, which often can be very complex systems, have to be separated according to parameters such as e.g. hydrodynamic volume or molecular weight. After the separation process the resulting narrow dispersed fractions are detected with different techniques. more

Real-Time PCR Quantification of Plant miRNAs Using Universal ProbeLibrary Technology
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are naturally occurring, highly conserved families of transcripts (18-25 nt in length) that are processed from larger hairpin precursors. Both plant and animal genomes encode miRNAs, and to date, there are over 4000 mature miRNA transcripts annotated. Although miRNAs represent a relatively abundant class of transcripts, their expression levels vary greatly among species and tissues. Less abundant miRNAs routinely fail detection using technologies such as cloning, northern hybridization and microarray analysis. Here, we present a real-time quantification method for accurate, sensitive, and economical detection of plant miRNAs based upon the stem-loop RT primer approach using an miRNA-specific primer coupled with a stem-loop specific Universal ProbeLibrary (UPL) probe. This approach represents a highly specific, sensitive, and easy-to-apply system to detect miRNAs. more

Fugene® HD Transfection Reagent: Superior Performance for Challenging Expression Studies
The ability to efficiently introduce foreign molecules into cells constitutes an important tool in any laboratory and facilitates studies of gene regulation and protein function. A plethora of transfection methods have been developed for transfer of DNA into mammalian and animal cells. Those methods either utilize the physicochemical properties of the vector-carrier of the DNA or use mammalian viruses. In the first group of methods, some classic techniques are well-known, such as: calcium phosphate, DEAE-dextran, electroporation liposome-mediated delivery, direct microinjection/biolistic particle delivery, and non-liposomal multi-component reagents. Viral vector systems use both DNA (Adeno-) and RNA (Retro-, Lenti-) viruses. more
