Adding "chemical shift" techniques to MRI can help differentiate clear cell renal cell carcinoma from other types of renal cell cancer, a new study shows. That differentiation can help physicians better determine treatment for these patients. The study, conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital in more

CT and serum LDH shows promise as survival predictor for some metastatic melanoma patients
Combining CT imaging findings with baseline serum lactate dehydrogenase levels is showing promise as a way to predict survival in patients with metastatic melanoma being treated with anti-angiogenic therapy. With the hope of predicting patient survival, researchers at the University of Mississippi M more

New technology spots drugs' early impact on cancer
A new preclinical technology enables researchers to quickly determine if a particular treatment is effective against gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), providing a boost to animal research and possibly patient care, according to new findings presented by Fox Chase Cancer Center. The advantage more

Analysis of the DNA Methylation Patterns at the BRCA1 CpG Island
Germ-line alterations of the BRCA1 gene confer a lifetime risk of 40% for ovarian cancers and of 40%-80% for breast cancers. It is likely that BRCA1 acts as a tumor suppressor gene. BRCA1 involvement in breast cancers does not seem to be restricted to familial cancers. Despite the absence of somatic mutations in the breast tissues, a down regulation of BRCA1 expression is associated with malignancy in human sporadic breast cancers. more

Enabling Cancer Research with FuGENE® HD Transfection Reagent
A major problem in some areas of cancer research is the difficulty of transfecting a significant number of the cells of interest, while minimizing the cytotoxic or other off-target effects of the transfection event itself. It is well-known that the use of some transfection reagents results in high levels of expression of the gene of interest in surviving cells, but also in high levels of cell death or other cellular alterations. FuGENE® HD Transfection Reagent overcomes these problems, results in high levels of transfection in many cancer cell lines, and thus enables researchers to conduct experiments that have previously not been possible. more
