  • AFM positioning: Shining light on a needle in a haystack

The researchers characterize their new technique as a neat solution to the "needle in a haystack" problem of nanoscale microscopy, but it's more like the difference between finding the coffee table in a darkened room either by walking around until you fall over it, or using a flashlight. In a new pa more

  • Graphene: Singles and the few

A timely review analyzing the correlation of synthesis methods and physical properties of single-layer and few-layered graphene flakes. A review of methods used for synthesizing both single and few-layer graphene and the resulting properties is presented by C.N.R. Rao and colleagues at the Jawaharla more

  • Getting a grip on CO2 capture: Canadian researchers 'see' how to capture CO2

The ability to keep CO2 out of the atmosphere to help prevent climate change is a global issue. The challenge is to use materials that can capture the CO2 and easily release it for permanent storage. Researchers at the University of Calgary and University of Ottawa have provided deeper insights to C more

  • Dynamic Light Scattering - an Important Tool for Protein Crystallography and Nanotechnology

Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) is an established technique in the field of protein crystallography. DLS is used to measure hydrodynamic sizes, polydispersities and aggregation effects of protein samples. These are important parameters for the crystallisation of proteins. DLS is also used in the nanotechnology research for the accurate and fast size measurement of nanoparticles made of different materials. more

  • Automated Dynamic Light Scattering

DLS analysis is a widely applied, non-invasive method for measuring the effective size of molecules in solution. This technique yields valuable information for the characterization of molecules and particles. It facilitates formerly laborious and time consuming measurements, e.g. screening for aggregates or determining optimal crystallization conditions for proteins. The Wyatt Plate Reader is the instrument of choice for any application where molecular size, stability and aggregation are of interest. It reads industry standard microplates with up to 1536 samples automatically and temperature-controlled, if desired. The applications of the technique are wide ranging and include many of the fastest growing areas of research - proteins, biomaterials, liposomes and micelles as well as the established uses for particle sizing and aggregation detection. Conscious of the numerous characterization challenges in the area of drug delivery systems and therapeutic antibodies more

  • Efficient Transfection of Neuroblastoma Cell Lines Using FuGENE® HD Transfection Reagent

Efficient transfection of cells is a prerequisite for genetic manipulation. However, many cell lines remain hard to transfect with established protocols, hampering consecutive analysis. Here, we compare three different methods (FuGENE® HD Transfection Reagent, transfection reagent L, and calcium phosphate) for the transfection of neuroblastoma cell lines. We show that FuGENE® HD Transfection Reagent is able to transfect all of these cell lines with high efficiency for further analysis. more
