What is RSS?

RSS (Real Simple Syndication) is a specific Internet message format that gives you the opportunity to receive current content and information simply. In contrast to e-mail services with fixed publishing frequences users of RSS-feeds receive information using a frequency that they determine themselves. The so-called RSS-feed gives the user the headings and a teaser on new articles, entries etc. on a website. The exact content depends on which feed is called up.

What is the advantage?

RSS-feeds offer various advantages. The feeds are always current and can be called up at any time. Most programmes (so-called feed readers) call up the current contributions automatically and create an archive that can be sorted and searched. Contributions that have already been read are automatically marked for clarity. The reader quickly has an overview of news as only the heading and a couple of lines are shown initially. A link connects to the full content on the website, where the user can read more on the specific contributions that interest him.

How does it work?

RSS-feeds can be read using various programmes. Besides specialist feed readers the current version of Internet Explorer, the free browser Firefox and Windows Vista can also use RSS content. In the following we will explain the use of RSS step for step.

Internet Explorer 6

  • Go to the portal of your choice.
  • Click on the orange field icon in the address line of the browser in order to select one of the RSS feeds. You will now receive an overview of the feed content. Alternatively you can also use this overview page for selection.
  • Click on the header line of the overview on the line 'subscribe to feed'
  • To then call up the feed at any time click on the menu item 'favourites' and the sub-item 'feeds'. This will give you an overview of all subscribed feeds and will display their content at a click of the mouse.

Firefox 2.x / 3.x

  • Go to the portal of your choice.
  • Click on the orange field icon in the address line of the browser in order to select one of the RSS feeds. You will now receive an overview of the feed content. Alternatively you can also use this overview page for selection.
  • Click on the header line of the overview on the item 'subscribe feed as dynamic bookmark' and subscribe to the feed. If you wish to use a Firefox extension such as Sage, Brief, WizzRSS or similar then save the dynamic bookmark in the corresponding bookmark folder that is used by this extension.
  • To call up the feed at any time either click on the relevant entry in your bookmarks or start the corresponding browser extension.
