NYU Langone scientists are first to sequence the genomes of 2 ant species
Scientists have finally sequenced the entire genome of an ant, actually two very different species of ant, and the insights gleaned from their genetic blueprints are already yielding tantalizing clues to the extraordinary social behavior of ants. A result of a collaborative research project led by D more

Metagenomics Analysis Using the Genome Sequencer FLX System
The Genome Sequencer FLX System from 454 Life Sciences and Roche Applied Science is a versatile sequencing platform suitable for a wide range of applications, including de novo sequencing and assembly of genomic DNA, transcriptome sequencing, small RNA analysis, and amplicon sequencing. The Genome Sequencer FLX is built upon 454 Sequencing technology that enables long read lengths and very high single-read accuracy. One application in which the technology is accelerating the field's understanding is metagenomics. more

Detection of Avian H5N1 Virus with the LightCycler® Instrument
The avian H5N1 influenza virus has killed thousands of birds and caused several fatal cases in humans in Asia and Turkey. A fast and reliable test to identify the virus is urgently required for an effective epedemiological control, and associated medical research activities. RNA viruses mutate easily. Thus, detection has to focus on conserved sequence regions. The preferred gene for the detection of a broad spectrum of influenza A virus variants is the matrix protein (M2) gene. Tests for the specific detection of the H5N1 virus must detect its hemagglutinin (H5) and neuraminidase (N1) genes. more

Quantitative Detection of Legionella pneumophila in Water Samples: Assay Transfer to the LightCycler® 480 Real-Time PCR System
An assay to detect and quantify Legionella spp. in water samples was successfully transferred from a capillary-based LightCycler® Instrument to the novel multiwell plate-based LightCycler® 480 System. A previously described protocol was easily adapted by modifying the fluorescent label of the detection probe to match the filter set of the LightCycler® 480 Instrument. While reproducibility and analytical sensitivity of the assay were found to be comparable on both systems, the novel plate-based instrument allowed for higher sample throughput and reduced assay time per sample. more
