  • Cornell: Project aims to sequence 2,500 genomes

Cornell researchers are part of an international collaboration to build the most detailed map of human genetic variation. The map promises to provide a much more comprehensive understanding of the role of inherited DNA variation in human history, evolution and disease and the best methods to use to more

  • Pivoting hooks of graphene's chemical cousin could revolutionize work of electron microscopes

The single layer material Graphene was the subject of a Nobel prize this year but research led by a team of researchers at the University of Warwick has found molecular hooks on the surface of its close chemical cousin, Graphene Oxide, that will potentially provide massive benefits to researchers us more

  • Fuel cells in operation: A closer look

Measuring a fuel cell's overall performance is relatively easy, but measuring its components individually as they work together is a challenge. That's because one of the best experimental techniques for investigating the details of an electrochemical device while it's operating is x-ray photoelectro more

  • cDNA Synthesis with the Transcriptor First Strand cDNA Synthesis Kit from Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded Tissue (FFPET) Samples

Partial degradation of RNA is a common problem when working with FFPET samples. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR assays amplifying the 5´- and 3´-end sequences of the housekeeping gene b-actin present a solution: calculating the ratio of the 3´- to 5´-amplicon allows assessment of RNA integrity. An important step for reproducible quantification is the reverse transcription reaction. The applicability of the new Transcriptor First Strand cDNA Synthesis Kit to partially degraded FFPET RNA was evaluated. The new kit is compared with the widely used First Strand cDNA Synthesis Kit for RT-PCR (AMV). Under modified reaction conditions (temperature, time) the kit reversely transcribes the FFPET samples with high efficiency. more

  • Automated Dynamic Light Scattering

DLS analysis is a widely applied, non-invasive method for measuring the effective size of molecules in solution. This technique yields valuable information for the characterization of molecules and particles. It facilitates formerly laborious and time consuming measurements, e.g. screening for aggregates or determining optimal crystallization conditions for proteins. The Wyatt Plate Reader is the instrument of choice for any application where molecular size, stability and aggregation are of interest. It reads industry standard microplates with up to 1536 samples automatically and temperature-controlled, if desired. The applications of the technique are wide ranging and include many of the fastest growing areas of research - proteins, biomaterials, liposomes and micelles as well as the established uses for particle sizing and aggregation detection. Conscious of the numerous characterization challenges in the area of drug delivery systems and therapeutic antibodies more
