  • Pioneering research reveals bacterium's secrets

Ground-breaking research by an international team of scientists will help to make one of the most versatile of bacteria even more useful to society and the environment.Though it lives naturally in the soil, the bacterium Bacillus subtilis is widely used as a model laboratory organism. It is also use more

  • Research will speed tracing bacteria behind salmonella outbreaks

During such mass food-poisoning outbreaks as the recent contamination of ground turkey, speedy identification of the bacteria involved can save lives and reduce illness. New research co-authored by a Cornell food scientist will accelerate the process of identifying strains of salmonella bacteria beh more

  • Genome analysis will reveal how bacteria in our guts make themselves at home

Researchers from the Institute of Food Research and The Genome Analysis Centre have published the genome sequence of a gut bacterium, to help understand how these organisms evolved their symbiotic relationships with their hosts. The relationship between gut bacteria and the gastrointestinal tract is more

  • Metagenomics Analysis Using the Genome Sequencer FLX System

The Genome Sequencer FLX System from 454 Life Sciences and Roche Applied Science is a versatile sequencing platform suitable for a wide range of applications, including de novo sequencing and assembly of genomic DNA, transcriptome sequencing, small RNA analysis, and amplicon sequencing. The Genome Sequencer FLX is built upon 454 Sequencing technology that enables long read lengths and very high single-read accuracy. One application in which the technology is accelerating the field's understanding is metagenomics. more

  • Quantitative Detection of Legionella pneumophila in Water Samples: Assay Transfer to the LightCycler® 480 Real-Time PCR System

An assay to detect and quantify Legionella spp. in water samples was successfully transferred from a capillary-based LightCycler® Instrument to the novel multiwell plate-based LightCycler® 480 System. A previously described protocol was easily adapted by modifying the fluorescent label of the detection probe to match the filter set of the LightCycler® 480 Instrument. While reproducibility and analytical sensitivity of the assay were found to be comparable on both systems, the novel plate-based instrument allowed for higher sample throughput and reduced assay time per sample. more

  • Rapid Screening by Direct Colony PCR Using the FastStart PCR Master

The FastStart PCR Master is a convenient and ideal tool for direct colony PCR. Intact bacteria can be analyzed directly without prior template purification, FastStart PCR Master is therefore the tool of choice for rapid screening of cloning experiments. In this paper, we describe the use of the FastStart PCR Master for the amplification and cloning of mRNA including direct colony screening. more
